Deadpool #19 Books Reviews
In my usual comic reading I actually prefer an artist with a bit more detail to his art; some people might call it ‘over worked’ but I like the very line-heavy style that other artist have. Shalvey is quite sparing with his drawing leaving a lot of flat space to be colored, but it works in this situation. Deadpool does not do ‘splash pages,’ the entire comic is cut into small panels with the largest in the entire comic barely filling half a page. This allows the frenetic pace that lets Deadpool crash through the scenery and pull Stetsons out of his hole without giving you time enough to realize that he has done it. If the art was more detailed then every page would look too dense and hard to follow, but this lets the pictures flow with the story.
This comic has been so good that I feel that saying anything other than flat out praise is almost sacrilegious given what has gone before. I almost expected it given that the four preceding issues have been such a roller-coaster of a ride that I did not think that the ending could be as satisfying. The big reveal from last time in the pit with the bodies was the end for this arc, everything afterwards was merely tying up loose ends.
I do not want to give the wrong impression because there are some fantastic moments in this comic. Interestingly Deadpool does not hog them all, some of them are actually shared out with Cap and Logan. Having defeated one camp last week, the three of them want to take out this final research base and escape before the entire North Korean army turns up to stop them. Rogers gets his moment of looking impressive before the oncoming army and the resolution to the glorious charge is definitely not what I was expecting. Deadpool dealing with Butler was, predictable, but entirely justified and gave a nice resolution to the arc, but ultimately as with any battle between the strong hero and weak villain you do not get the long drawn out glorious battle that you feel you want.
For any other title this would have been a rousing success to the end of the arc, but because of its brilliance last time it has just left me feeling a little flat.
