There are many who do not wish for peace.
As the Free Legion declares war on the survivors of Hollow Rock, Gabriel and Eric find themselves drawn ever deeper into the growing conflict. Aided by a fledgling militia, and a small contingent of federal operatives, the two warriors must find a way to defeat an unyielding enemy who threatens to destroy all they have grown to love.
To win, Gabriel must become the leader he was born to be, while Eric, haunted by his actions since the Outbreak, must descend deeper into the heart of darkness.
In this battle, nothing is what it seems. The tides of power are shifting, and soon, a danger even greater than the living dead will rise.

I was so close to 5 stars on this book it wasn't funny. The problem with that, is there is nowhere to go from there. Well, I changed my mind, 5 stars! As I pondered what I would say in my review of Warrior Within, I stopped and read a few of the other posted reviews. One thing I did appreciate about this series (to date) is that it isn't all about the zombies, they are more about the changes a person goes though to survive in the new world. Gabe and Eric struggle with the old morality as they move through the stories. Where, in the beginning, Eric was pretty much a "pretty boy", he's now become someone that I don't even think he recognizes anymore. Where the mere mention of the word, "torture" would have turned his stomach in book 1, we find Eric now willing to be a participant in getting information from the bad guys when he has to. Then there is Gabe. The mystery friend that Eric slowly realizes that he really doesn't know at all. Gabe rarely offers insights into himself to anyone, including his best friend, Eric. Gabe is so afraid that Eric will turn tail and run if he ever finds out the truth. So Gabe waits, patiently. If he's nothing, Gabe is a patient man. When Eric finally asks him a question, he mulls it over, trying to decide how much of the truth about himself he's willing to share.... No more clues. Read the books! Start with book 1 and go straight thorough to book 3. I re-read 1 and 2 before I started book 3 and I'm glad I did it! Awesome work!Product details

Warrior Within Surviving the Dead Volume 3 (Audible Audio Edition) James N Cook Jordan Leigh JN Cook Entertainment LLC Books Reviews
This book is the last of an apocalyptic trilogy by James Cook, a fairly new author and self published. From the opening sentence of the first book, No Easy Hope, to the last sentence of The Warrior Within, this author's writing shows far more maturity and complexity than any apocalyptic book I have ever read, and was so much better than well known authors charging four times as much for their books here on .
I cannot begin to take this vast story apart here and do it justice. I can say that what starts out as a zombie novel, somewhere along the way became a true cautionary tale about humanity and what it is capable of when our technology and sense of safety gets ripped away from us. There has been some criticism from other reviewers about how there is too much gun talk in this story, too much detail, too much inner head talk, and perhaps worst of all, too many typographical errors. To the last, I would say two words SELF PUBLISHED. Enough said. In my opinion, the detail, the head talk, the subtle way the story is weaved, were the best parts of these books.
Humanity today is spoiled. We have become complacent and rely far too much on technology and not enough on any real thinking considering how fragile this network of technology really is. James Cook takes two men, one who is ex military and highly aware of this fragility, and the other the exact opposite, brings them together and makes them lifelong friends. Through these two men, he weaves a very complicated story about a zombie virus and ending with a far more insidious enemy humanity itself. This is a powerful story and might overwhelm people looking for for a simple zombie story about us vs. them. This is one of those series of books I am going to have a hard time leaving behind because I get very much the intense message this series conveys. I have read many books that get bogged down in detail that would put the best of us to sleep. But James managed to, in my opinion, make the detail not just enormously interesting, but a bit of an education as well. I never felt bored or overwhelmed by this series. On the contrary, it was, as I said before, a cautionary tale about what will happen if we don't start paying more attention to what is going on around us in an increasingly complicated world.
To James this last book is, by far, the best of the three. Just one thing though - it needs a few more edits for misspellings and missing words (good thing I have an active imagination!). To anyone else reading this review I would give this series ten stars if available. I often recommend good books to read, but rarely get a chance to recommend a great series of books such as this one. This series is so good, I actually slowed myself down in the last book because I honestly could have read about Gabe and Eric for a very long time. Not For children and also not many young adults either. Not because of bad language (there is some!), but for graphic images, and adult themes (meaning complex story arc, not sexual content, although, there was just enough love story to keep it from being just a guy's type of book!).
Excellent work, James. I look forward to following your long and successful career as an author!
I agree, totally, this series is getting even better and so is the author's writing skills. This is the 3rd in his series and I was happily shocked to see how much Mr. Cook's writing has improved. This is not to say that the previous stories or his writing were bad - absolutely not - but this was a notch above them. The story flowed better yet has new twists and turns, the dialogue snapped and the characters were more defined, more real as you see them harden. I especially like how 'real' the main characters are displayed with all their worries and warts, flaws and failures. And, there are set backs and failures in the story as each decision or win has its own repercussions - no bed of roses, no ride into the sunset.. It's well written and wonderfully enjoyable! And, I am purchasing #4 and #5 right now as proof of how much I enjoyed it. It will be interesting to see if Mr. Cook can continue to improve or at least maintain the new benchmark he has created for himself. I hope so. With this book, I now rate Mr. Cook in the top #3 of this genre, perhaps top #2...but will wait and see until after reading book #4.
